On a beautiful October Saturday morning, the San Diego Miramar Lions Club drove down to Fiesta Island, in San Diego, with the purpose of cleaning up the beaches and surrounding areas. Leading the project, Lion Jen, gathered us up as a group starting at 0800. Donned with hats, sun screen, gloves, masks, garbage bags, and trash pick-up sticks, we started our journey in and around the water, sand, and activity areas of Fiesta Island.

In just under two hours, we found metal pieces, broken glass, soda cans, fast food bags filled with leftovers and oh so many cigarette butts. There were plastic bottles, used diapers, and items that left us without words. The further we walked around the island, the more we found. We were cheered by beachgoers, and the community waved, honked, and offered their thanks as they scouted out a place to park. We were greeted warmly and thanked openly. Their kind words, that acknowledged our actions, included how grateful they were to have trash removed protecting their furry friends as well our friends in the air. The beaches were left just a little bit cleaner, and the environment a little bit safer for all to enjoy.

The San Diego Miramar Lions Club will add this area to our future projects and invite each of you reading this to join us in our efforts. All are welcome!
