San Diego Miramar Lions Club Teams Up with Wreaths Across America

What started out as a cool, crisp December morning, at Miramar National Cemetery, ended with the sun peeking out of the clouds and the temperature warming to 68 degrees. On December 14, 2019, the San Diego Miramar Lions Club were honored to team up with the national organization, Wreaths Across America, reverently placing 11,000 wreaths at every single military headstone of our Nation’s fallen heroes, in a single morning.

The day began with the arrival of hundreds of volunteers from a multitude of non-profit, volunteer, and military organizations greeting each other, and sharing a cup of coffee or hot chocolate in the early morning hours. Volunteers began the chore of orchestrating organized parking by directing cars, trucks, and other supply vehicles in and around the cemetery, and later the guided direction of all of the volunteers. Tables and awnings were set up to offer volunteers and attendees “morning nibbles” and hot drinks, and others offered maps, programs, and the timing of events.

A holiday memorial program was presented at the outside theater area complete with guest speakers, band, singers, prayer, and active duty military members from all branches of service to present their individual military wreath on those laid to rest here. Following the service, volunteers took to their stations, while our active duty military stood the watch at parade rest among our fallen. Each wreath was placed on the headstone, the name of the military member was read, and a moment dedicated to each member in remembrance. Lest we not forget those who paved the way before us.

It was a moving service and volunteer event. If you are reading this article, I hope you will consider volunteering next year for our fallen military members at any national cemetery. Wishing all of you – holiday joy and happiness in 2020.
